Toothbrush…check. Cell phone…check. Debit card…check.
I’m all packed up and fully armed with all the essentials for my “English Adventure”! Little did I know that I was going to run headlong into a difficult truth of UK commerce where merchants prefer cash! In fact, to call it their “preference” is a little bit like saying “some English folks enjoy their football”! Many (and I mean a lot of) merchants will accept cash and ONLY cash! And, for me….an American in England, it turns out that these just so happen to be nearly all of the merchants I’m so desperate to do business with! “Sorry miss….we only take cash” seems to be a national catch phrase, popular among those enterprising merchants intent on turning a profit.
Ok, I’m resilient, born to adapt. I’ve just crossed the ocean and travelled to another continent….I can do this. I’ll just hit an ATM and grab some cash. Besides, the ATMs here are free! None of that expensive “surcharging” that goes on back in America. I won’t have to worry about the first three dollars of each withdrawal of my hard earned money going to pay some invisible guy who isn’t even standing there, ready to hand me my cash. This is good. This is the way the way it’s supposed to be, but one snag. Where do I go to find an ATM? Back home, ATMs are everywhere! Every store, every restaurant, every gas station…all have an ATM standing by to dispense my cash. And to make matters worse, I can’t even take a taxi to find an ATM….”Sorry miss….London taxis only take cash”!
Well, there is an answer to this dilemma. There is a solution that’s plain to see and easy to appreciate. YourCash ATMs! All I have to do is look for the free-to-use YourCash sign and I’m on my way to ready cash access.
